Engineering for the Earth: a planetary perspective.

This Master Class addresses the need to confront the alterations that humans have caused in the Earth's dynamic systems on a global scale. In a world where our level of development has a profound impact on the natural environment, it is essential to address these challenges with creativity and complex thinking.

Professor Julio Eduardo Cañón Barriga proposes radical ideas that confront current models of development, seeking to harmonize our presence as a planetary species with the natural environment. In addition, he examines the role of justice, ethics and planetary legislation in the search for solutions. The Master Class also presents scientific and engineering proposals to address the climate and environmental crises. It explores various solutions that can help mitigate the effects of our impact on the environment and promote sustainable development.

This class covers several of the eight thematic foci around which the 2019 Report of the Colombian Mission of Wise People was structured. It covers topics such as: environment, sustainable energy, converging technologies, human development and equity. Additional topics include oceans and hydrobiological resources. He will also invite you to learn about how you can address the challenges of "being a planetary species in a powerful dynamic terrestrial system, but with limits."

This chapter is aimed at anyone interested in reflecting, learning and getting acquainted with solutions for sustainability and equity of the planet from a holistic perspective.
