APPLICATIONS OF BIOMATERIALS BASED ON POLYSACCHARIDES DERIVATIVES OF MARINE ALGAE FROM COLOMBIA. Sponsor: Institutional Links - Newton Fund - British Council. 2017-2018. 

  • Currently there is increasing demand for natural and environmentally sustainable products to make an affordable biomaterial for use in bone healing. In this regard, marine-derived materials such as brown seaweed, have become an important source of natural-functional products having a significant market value with wide range of possibilities to be applied in the medical, food, pharmacy and cosmetic industries. The brown seaweed is a common invasive species found on the coasts of Caribbean countries, and their accumulation not only endangers the local economy and ecosystems, but also have health risk, because in state of putrefaction, algae release hydrogen sulphide. Colombia, despite being one of the countries described as mega-diverse has not sufficiently utilised its marine resources for sustainable economic development and social progress of the communities that inhabit the marine coast. In contrast, Latin American countries such as Chile, Peru and Ecuador have advanced in the economic exploitation of marine resources through different human consumption products. The expectation is that the outcomes of this proposal will lead, in the medium-long term, to the exploitation of seaweed that will benefit the local economies through sustainable development of seaweed agri-business, generating different algae-based products.

PHOTOSTABILITY AND UV-PROTECTION OF POTENTIAL BIOACTIVES AND DEVELOPING OF A MICROENCAPSULATED CONTROLLED RELEASE SYSTEM. Sponsor: CODI-UDEA. 2013-2017. 

  • Excessive ultraviolet radiation can cause skin cancer and related health problems in humans. Traditionally, organic and inorganic sunscreens have been used to minimize these effects. Some plants from the Andes Mountains grow around the Equator region at altitudes above 2500 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.). These plants are directly exposed to high levels of solar radiation throughout the year, and it is expected that they possess resistance mechanisms, among them high concentrations of antioxidative compounds, which are capable of absorbing the harmful UVR. Besides, some compounds present in these plants play an important role as photoprotectors. The aim was to evaluate the potentiality of some plant species as natural filters with UV protection, to induce the artificial production of bioactive compounds in that promising species and finally to develop a protocol for the production of a photoestable and easily formulated product.

  • Presently, the systems used for the treatment of burns and wounds have provided ideal conditions of humidity, temperature and pH, are easily removable and allow the exchange of vapors with the surrounding environment reducing the probability of infection. However, these systems are expansive and not accessible to the most vulnerable population (scarce economic resources). For this reason, the objective of the present investigation was to obtain a dressing impregnated with Aloe vera which, in addition to allowing a fast healing of wounds, is biodegradable, non-cytotoxic, with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, and low cost Help the population more vulnerable to a better quality of life.
