Natural products for cancer chemoprevention

As part of the Master Class UdeA program: local talent at the service of global causes, we present the Master Class entitled: "Natural products for cancer chemoprevention".  This class focuses on the thematic axis Biotechnology, Bioeconomy and Environment. It addresses one of the main public health problems worldwide.

Cancer is a multifactorial disease influenced by both heredity and the environment.  According to the WHO, it is the second leading cause of death globally. Despite advances in early diagnosis and therapy, it is still detected and treated in advanced stages.  There is a large body of epidemiological and experimental evidence supporting the idea that certain dietary modulatory factors (bioactive compounds) play a key role in cancer prevention.

This Master Class will address prevention and chemoprevention strategies through dietary changes and the use of bioactive compounds in fruits and vegetables.  The importance of Colombian food and biodiversity as a potential source of natural products to combat certain types of cancer will be discussed.  Besides, the growing demand from health-conscious consumers has driven the market for functional foods with chemopreventive properties.  Therefore, it is critical to understand and take advantage of Colombia's biodiversity to identify and evaluate bioactive compounds in plant foods, with the goal of developing cancer chemopreventive products.  This Master Class is aligned with the strategic lines of Biointelligent Colombia, Health and Wellness of the Bioeconomy mission.

It is aimed at practitioners and students of biological and health sciences who wish to broaden their knowledge of the chemopreventive properties of natural products from Colombian biodiversity against cancer.
