About group

Objectives

  • 1. To strengthen research activities in the frontier among hadronic physics, nuclear physics and computational physics in the Institute of Physics, University of Antioquia.
  • 2. To support a doctorate program and a master program in the Institute of Physics, University of Antioquia.
  • 3. To promote cooperation between U. of Antioquia and The New Mexico State University, USA, and the Theoretical physics Institute, Academy of Sciences, China.
  • 4. Form an alliance with a nuclear medicine group from a  university or a hospital, in the hope to promote the education and research in the field of nuclear medicine.
  • 5. To create conditions for the establishment of a nuclear physics lab, which will be used for research and for education.

Challenges

Hadronic processes involve degree-of-freedom other than nucleons, thus one needs to deal with by employing both the field theory (particle physics) and many-body theory (nuclear physics).

The Monte-Carlo shell model requires considerable computer time, thus it is a big challenge for us to obtain very decent computing facility.
One of the fast developing field of applied nuclear physics is nuclear medicine. It is of strategical importance to create a research body in this field by a joint efforts of nuclear physicists and medical doctors in the University of Antioquia.

A major difficulty in establishing a nuclear physics lab is the funding.

View

Theoretical nuclear physics forms one important part of the knowledge on the nature. Any advance in this field will deepen our understanding of the structure of matter, and will stimulate the interest of the young generation in their pursuit of academic studies. Thus nuclear physics study is an indispensable part of efforts to improve scientific and technological research in Colombia.

On the other hand, the wide range applications of nuclear physics are making more and more contributions to the progress of our society. In particular, nuclear medicine becomes a useful means in the diagnostic and therapeutic processes. Therefore it is of strategical importance to create research in this field by joint efforts of nuclear physicists and medical doctors.
