About us

The Research Group on Environmental Remediation and Biocatalysis, GIRAB, attached to the Chemical Institute of the University of Antioquia emerges from the growing need about of the development of new and more efficient systems for the treatment of water contaminated with chemical and microbiological pollutants.

Therefore, in June 2011 GIRAB was born with the purpose of developing chemical, photochemical, sonochemical and electrochemical methods, alone or in combination with other conventional or biological systems for the treatment of contaminated water. Our particular interest is finding economical, simple and reliable solutions for water reuse.

For this purpose, the investigation of the feasibility of the technologies, the mechanisms and routes of pollutant degradation, the identification of degradation by-products and the evaluation of the biodegradability and toxicity degree of waters before, during and at the end of treatments are carefully studied.
